Quick answer

Efficacy Pest Control's Goa branch in Chimbel provides wood borer treatment across Panaji, including Altinho, Miramar, Dona Paula, Taleigao and Ribandar. A technician first confirms whether the infestation is active. They then inject a registered wood-preserving treatment into the beetle tunnels, treat bare surfaces and advise on repair where timber is badly weakened. Homes, flats, heritage houses, shops, offices and hotels can be treated, usually without anyone moving out.

Key points

  • Fresh, pale powder below small round holes usually means wood borer larvae are still active inside the timber.
  • Polished or painted wood generally needs treatment injected into the tunnels, because the finish stops surface treatments from soaking in.
  • Treatment stops the insects but does not restore strength, so badly weakened structural timber should be assessed and repaired.
  • The Goa branch is a licensed pest control operator (Directorate of Agriculture, Goa) using CIB&RC-registered products.
  • Panaji coverage includes Altinho, Campal, Miramar, Caranzalem, Dona Paula, Taleigao, St Inez and Ribandar.

Wood borer treatment in Panaji starts with one question: is the infestation still active? Small round holes and little heaps of fine powder under a bed, cupboard or door frame are the classic signs that beetle larvae are tunnelling inside the wood. Efficacy Pest Control's Goa branch is based in nearby Chimbel. We inspect and treat affected furniture, doors, frames and structural timber in homes, flats, villas, shops, offices and hotels across Panaji (also called Panjim).

We are a licensed pest control operator with the Directorate of Agriculture, Goa, and we use CIB&RC-registered products. This page explains how to recognise wood borer, what treatment involves in a Panaji home or business, and how to prepare for it. For a general overview, see our wood borer treatment service.

Is it wood borer, termites or just old damage?

Wood borers are beetles. The adults lay eggs in cracks, pores or old exit holes in timber. The larvae that hatch then spend months, sometimes a few years, feeding inside the wood before they emerge as adults through a small round hole.

What you see on the surface is only the exit point. Most of the damage is out of sight, which is why a careful look matters before anything is treated.

What you noticeWhat it usually suggests
Fresh, pale, flour-like powder below small round holesActive powder-post beetle larvae, often in hardwoods, bamboo and cane
Gritty powder containing tiny pelletsFurniture beetle activity, more typical of older or damper timber
Holes with dark, weathered edges and no new powderPossibly old, inactive damage. Worth checking before deciding to treat
Mud tubes, soil-packed tunnels or wood that sounds hollow along the grainMore likely termites, which need a different treatment

Here is a simple test. Wipe away any powder, then check the same spot a week or two later. If fresh powder appears, the infestation is active.

If you are unsure, our guide on how to tell termites and wood borer apart explains the differences in more detail. Termite problems in the city are handled through our termite control service in Panaji.

Where does wood borer show up in Panaji properties?

Panaji has a mix of old and new buildings, so wood borer turns up in different places depending on the property. Goa's humid coastal climate and heavy south-west monsoon keep timber damp for much of the year. Damp wood is more attractive to some borer species and harder to keep protected.

  • Heritage homes in Altinho and Ribandar: Portuguese-era houses often have wooden ceilings, rafters, staircases, window shutters and heavy carved furniture. Old timber that was never treated, or has been patched over the decades, is worth inspecting room by room.
  • Sea-facing flats in Miramar, Caranzalem and Dona Paula: salty, humid air and rooms kept shut through the monsoon can leave cupboards and wooden panelling damp. Wardrobes built against outer walls deserve a regular look.
  • Newer apartments in Taleigao and St Inez: modular wardrobes, kitchen cabinets and doors made from plywood, block board or veneered board can be attacked. This is more likely where the board or veneer was not treated at manufacture.
  • Bamboo, cane and rattan furniture: these are readily attacked by powder-post type beetles, whether in a home verandah or a café.
  • Inherited teak and rosewood pieces: polished antiques need gentler handling. Our guide to wood borer in teak and rosewood furniture covers what owners should look for.
  • Shops, offices and hotels around Campal and the city centre: wooden counters, display units, doors and panelled reception areas.

If you live in an older house, our guide on protecting Portuguese-era homes from termites and wood borer explains how to look after roof timber, floors and joinery between treatments.

How do we treat wood borer in a Panaji home or building?

Every job starts with an inspection. The right method depends on the type of wood, its finish, how far the damage has spread and whether the item can be moved.

Our approach follows Integrated Pest Management (IPM). That means we find the source, address the conditions that favour the pest, and treat only where treatment is needed.

  1. Inspection. The technician checks the item you have noticed and the wood around it. This includes nearby furniture, door and window frames, skirting, panelling and, where accessible, ceiling timber. Holes, powder, soft or crumbling wood and damp patches are noted.
  2. Deciding what is worth treating. Lightly or moderately affected wood can usually be treated in place. Badly weakened pieces, such as a crumbling rafter or a door frame that gives under pressure, may need replacing by a carpenter. Structural timber should be assessed for strength, because treatment stops the insects but does not restore lost strength.
  3. Injection into the tunnels. A registered wood-preserving treatment is introduced through existing exit holes and, where needed, small drilled points. It then travels along the tunnels where the larvae feed. This step is especially important for polished or painted wood, because the finish stops surface treatments from soaking in.
  4. Surface application. Bare, unpolished surfaces are treated by brush or spray so the wood absorbs a protective layer that discourages egg-laying. These include the backs and undersides of cupboards, the insides of drawers and unfinished rafters.
  5. Filling and finishing. Treated holes can be filled, so any new holes that appear later are easy to spot. The technician will tell you when the wood can be polished or repaired.
  6. Fumigation, where appropriate. For heavily infested movable items or stored goods, fumigation may be the better method. It has its own safety requirements, and we will explain if and why we recommend it.
  7. Report and advice. After the visit you receive a service report as proof of work, with WhatsApp updates. You also get advice on what to watch for over the following months.

Larvae can sit deep inside the wood, so an occasional new hole may still appear for a while after treatment. These come from adults that were already close to emerging. What matters is whether new powder and holes keep appearing over the following months. If they do, let us know.

How should you prepare, and is it safe at home?

Wood borer treatment in an occupied home is usually done room by room, and most families do not need to move out. A little preparation makes the visit quicker and safer.

  • Empty the cupboards, drawers and wardrobes that will be treated, and remove or cover clothes, linen and books.
  • Move food, utensils and crockery away from any kitchen cabinets being treated.
  • Clear space around affected furniture so the technician can reach the back and underside.
  • Point out antiques, delicate finishes or anything you would prefer not to have drilled.
  • Keep children and pets out of the room while work is going on.
  • Make sure a family member or representative is present during the service.

After treatment, keep children and pets away from treated surfaces until they are dry, or for as long as the technician advises. Open windows to ventilate the room, and wash your hands after touching treated wood. Wait for the go-ahead before putting clothes and food back.

Material Safety Data Sheets are maintained for the products we use, so ask if you would like to see the safety information. If anyone in the household feels unwell afterwards, please see a doctor.

Over the longer term, dry wood is your best defence. Fix leaks, air out cupboards when the monsoon eases, and keep cane and wooden items away from damp walls. Check second-hand furniture for holes and powder before bringing it into the house.

Wood borer in Panaji hotels, guest houses, offices and shops

Commercial premises often have a lot of wood in public view. This includes reception counters, panelled walls, guest-room furniture, doors, shelving and display units. We plan the work area by area and discuss timing with you, so that guests, customers and staff are disturbed as little as possible.

For hotels, restaurants and cafés, we provide documentation aligned with HACCP and FSSAI audit expectations, along with a service report after each visit. Kitchens and food stores need extra care, so food and utensils are cleared and covered before any treatment nearby.

Wood borer can also be handled within a wider scheduled programme. See commercial pest control in Panaji for more on this.

What affects the cost of wood borer treatment?

There is no single flat rate, because no two jobs are the same. The quote depends on:

  • the number and size of affected items, and the total area involved
  • how far the infestation has spread, and whether nearby wood is also affected
  • the type of wood and finish, since polished pieces rely more on injection
  • access, for example ceiling rafters or built-in units compared with free-standing furniture
  • whether fumigation or replacement of damaged timber is part of the solution
  • the type of property: flat, villa, heritage house, shop, office or hotel

After the inspection we share a quote with the work plan and the number of visits. Clear photos of the holes and powder, sent when you first get in touch, help us understand the problem before we visit.

Where a warranty applies to the service, it covers the treated area as set out in your service agreement. It does not cover structural changes, new construction, or cases where post-service instructions were not followed.

Frequently asked questions

QHow long does wood borer treatment take in a Panaji flat or house?

Treating a few pieces of furniture in a flat usually takes a few hours. A larger home, or a heritage house where ceiling rafters, staircases and shutters also need attention, can take longer or may be split across more than one visit. The technician will give you an estimated time frame after the inspection, once they have seen how much wood is affected and how easy it is to reach.

QDo we need to move out of the house during treatment?

In most cases, no. Work is done room by room, and you only need to keep children and pets out of the room being treated. Afterwards, keep them away from treated surfaces until these are dry or for as long as the technician advises. If a family member has a health condition that makes you concerned, mention it when booking so the plan can take it into account.

QWill there be a smell after treatment?

Some products leave a mild odour that fades over a short period. Opening windows and running a fan helps clear it faster. Keep cupboards open for a while if their insides were treated, and wait for the technician's go-ahead before putting clothes back. If anyone feels unwell after a treatment, please consult a doctor.

QHow long will the wood stay protected?

There is no fixed period. It depends on the type of wood, its finish, how much moisture it is exposed to and how it is looked after. In Goa's humid climate, keeping timber dry and well ventilated makes a real difference. Check treated items now and then for fresh powder or new holes, especially in the months after the monsoon, and tell us if you see signs of new activity.

QCan you treat just one bed or cupboard?

Yes, a single item can be treated. However, the technician will usually look at wooden items nearby as well, because beetles that emerged from one piece may already have laid eggs in another. Catching early signs in a neighbouring wardrobe or door frame is far easier than dealing with a bigger problem later. You decide what is treated once you have seen the findings.

QWill home remedies or surface sprays get rid of wood borer?

Polishing, oiling or spraying the surface rarely reaches larvae feeding deep inside the wood, especially in polished furniture where the finish blocks absorption. Putting items in the sun may help dry them but does not reliably reach the larvae. Please avoid mixing chemicals at home. If you see fresh powder, an inspection will show how far the damage goes and what treatment it needs.

QIs there a warranty on wood borer treatment?

For specific services, a warranty applies to the treated area, as set out in your service agreement. The terms vary with the treatment and the condition of the wood, and our team will explain them before work begins. The warranty does not cover structural changes, new construction, or cases where post-service instructions were not followed.
