Fly Control for Homes, Kitchens and Businesses: House Flies, Fruit Flies and Drain Flies

Effective fly control starts by identifying the fly and finding where it breeds. House flies breed in rotting organic waste, fruit flies in fermenting food and spills, and drain flies in the slimy film inside drains. Our approach removes or cleans those breeding sites, advises on sanitation, screening and fly-trapping devices, and adds targeted treatment only where it helps. Spraying alone rarely lasts if the source remains.

Key points

  • House flies breed in decaying organic waste, fruit flies in fermenting food and spills, and drain flies in the organic film inside drains.
  • Removing breeding sources is usually the most important step; spraying adults alone rarely gives lasting control.
  • Screens, strip or air curtains, light traps and lidded bins support sanitation but do not replace it.
  • Drain flies need drains and floor traps to be physically cleaned before any treatment can work.
  • Keep children and pets away from treated areas until dry or as advised, ventilate, and wash hands afterwards.

Flies are among the most persistent pests in Indian homes and food businesses, and among the most misunderstood. It is tempting to reach for a spray, see fewer flies for a day or two, and then watch them return. That happens because fly control only works when you deal with where flies breed, not just the adults you can see.

This page explains how we approach fly control for flats, houses, kitchens, restaurants, hotels and other commercial premises: identifying the species, reducing breeding sources, advising on devices, and using targeted treatment where it genuinely adds value.

Which flies are we dealing with?

Different flies breed in different places, so identification comes first. A treatment aimed at house flies will do little for drain flies, and the reverse is also true.

House flies

House flies are the familiar grey flies that land on food and tables. They lay eggs in moist, decaying organic matter such as kitchen waste, garbage bins, animal dung and compost. Because they move between waste and food, they can carry germs onto surfaces where food is prepared or eaten.

Fruit flies

Fruit flies are small, often tan or brown, with red eyes, and hover around fruit bowls, bins and bars. They breed in fermenting material: overripe fruit and vegetables, spilled juice, beer or soft drinks, damp mops and the sludge at the bottom of bins and drains.

Drain flies

Drain flies, also called moth flies, are tiny, fuzzy and moth-like. They rest on bathroom and kitchen walls near sinks, floor traps and drains. Their larvae live in the gelatinous film that builds up inside drain pipes, sewage lines and other wet, neglected spots.

Fruit flyFermenting fruit, spills, damp mops, bin residueFruit bowls, bars, pantries, binsRemoving fermenting material, cleaning spills and bins, traps
Drain flyOrganic film inside drains and floor trapsBathroom and kitchen walls near drainsPhysically cleaning drains and traps, then treating where needed

If the flies on your property do not match any of these, the inspection will try to identify them, as the right approach depends on the species.

Why does source reduction matter more than spraying?

Flies develop through egg, larva (maggot), pupa and adult stages. In warm, humid weather this cycle can be completed quickly, sometimes in little more than a week. If breeding material stays in place, killing adults simply clears space for the next batch to emerge.

Source reduction means finding and removing what the flies are breeding in. The most common sources we look for include:

  • Uncovered or overflowing bins, and bins that are emptied but never washed
  • Wet waste left overnight, especially in kitchens and canteens
  • Overripe fruit and vegetables in stores, pantries and fruit bowls
  • Drains, floor traps and grease traps with built-up sludge
  • Spills under equipment, behind counters and in bar areas
  • Damp mops, cloths and cleaning buckets left standing
  • Garden compost, animal waste and pet areas close to the house

Fixing these is often the single biggest step in getting a fly problem under control, and much of it can be done by the household or kitchen team with the right advice.

How does our fly control service work?

We follow an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach: inspection, sanitation and proofing advice, then targeted treatment. You can read more about this on our how we work page. A typical fly control visit follows these steps:

  1. Inspection: we walk through kitchens, stores, bin areas, drains, washrooms and entry points to see where flies are resting and breeding.
  2. Identification: we confirm which flies are present, as this decides the method.
  3. Source reduction plan: we point out breeding sites and explain what needs cleaning, covering or changing, and who is best placed to do it.
  4. Exclusion and device advice: we suggest practical measures such as screens and traps suited to the premises.
  5. Targeted treatment: where it will help, we treat specific breeding and resting areas rather than spraying everywhere.
  6. Review: where a scheduled programme is in place, later visits check whether sources have been dealt with and adjust the plan.

What devices help keep flies down?

Devices support good sanitation; they do not replace it. Used well, they reduce the number of flies entering and give a useful picture of whether numbers are rising or falling.

  • Fly screens and mesh: on windows, ventilators and exhaust openings, especially in kitchens.
  • Self-closing doors, strip curtains or air curtains: at service entrances and loading areas that stay open during working hours.
  • Insect light traps with glue boards: useful in food businesses. They should be placed away from food preparation surfaces and positioned so they do not attract flies in from outside.
  • Sticky traps and fruit fly traps: handy for monitoring and for small fruit fly problems in pantries and bars.
  • Lidded, regularly washed bins: simple, but among the most effective fly-control tools there are.

Glue boards in light traps also act as a record: checking and replacing them on schedule shows whether the programme is working.

What treatment do we use, and where?

Treatment is chosen for the species and the site, and is always targeted. Depending on what the inspection finds, it may include:

  • Treatment of resting surfaces where flies settle, such as bin areas, outer walls and service corridors, kept away from food-contact surfaces.
  • Fly baits in suitable stations placed in waste areas and other spots where flies gather, out of reach of food, children and pets.
  • Drain treatment for drain flies, which only works after the drain or floor trap has been physically cleaned to remove the organic film.
  • Treatment of breeding material that cannot be removed straight away, to stop larvae developing into adults.
  • Space treatment or fogging in specific situations for a short-term knockdown of adult flies. On its own it does not solve the problem, because it does not reach the breeding source.

Our Goa branch is a licensed pest control operator with the Directorate of Agriculture, Goa, and uses CIB&RC-registered products. Material Safety Data Sheets are maintained for the products we use. Because many fly problems are linked to cockroach and rodent activity in the same areas, we may also suggest looking at cockroach control during the same visit.

Fly control for restaurants, hotels and food businesses

Flies near food are a hygiene and audit concern. FSSAI's hygiene and sanitation requirements for food businesses, described in Schedule 4, include pest control among the areas they cover, and HACCP-based systems treat pest control as a prerequisite. A fly programme in a food business usually combines waste handling, drain cleaning schedules, screening, light traps and targeted treatment.

For food businesses served by our Goa branch, we provide documentation aligned with HACCP and FSSAI audit expectations, and share service reports after visits. See our restaurant pest management page for how fly control fits into a wider kitchen programme, or our annual maintenance contracts for scheduled, year-round visits.

How should you prepare, and what about safety?

A little preparation makes the visit more effective:

  • Empty and wash bins, and remove overripe fruit and vegetables
  • Cover or put away food, utensils and crockery in areas to be treated
  • Clear access to drains, floor traps, grease traps and bin areas
  • In businesses, have a kitchen or facility staff member available to show problem areas
  • Keep pets and children away from the areas being worked on

After treatment, follow the technician's instructions and any label directions. Keep children and pets away from treated areas until they are dry or for as long as advised, ventilate the space, and wash your hands after handling anything in treated areas. If anyone feels unwell or you are concerned about an illness linked to flies or food, please see a doctor.

When are flies at their worst?

Fly numbers tend to rise in warm, humid conditions, when waste breaks down fast. In Goa, the heavy south-west monsoon and humid coastal climate keep drains, bins and gardens damp for months. In the Hyderabad region, the hot summer and the monsoon both bring spells when waste and drains need closer attention. Our guide to seasonal pests and how to prepare covers what to expect through the year.

Frequently asked questions

QWhy do flies keep coming back after spraying?

Spraying usually kills only the adult flies present at that moment. If eggs and larvae are still developing in a bin, drain or pile of waste, new adults will keep emerging, often within days in warm weather. Lasting results come from finding and removing the breeding source, then using targeted treatment where it helps.

QWhere do the tiny fuzzy flies in my bathroom come from?

These are most likely drain flies, also called moth flies. Their larvae live in the slimy organic film that builds up inside drains, floor traps and pipes. Pouring chemicals down the drain rarely works on its own; the drain needs to be physically scrubbed or cleaned out to remove the film, and any treatment comes after that.

QIs an insect light trap enough to control flies?

No. Light traps are useful for catching flies indoors and for monitoring numbers, especially in food businesses, but they cannot fix a breeding source. If bins, drains or stored produce are producing flies, the trap will simply keep filling up. Traps work best alongside sanitation, screening and, where needed, targeted treatment.

QCan fly treatment be done in a working kitchen?

Usually yes, with planning. Treatment is kept away from food-contact surfaces, food and utensils are covered or removed, and timing is arranged around service where possible. Staff should follow the technician's instructions on when areas can be used again, keep surfaces as advised, ventilate and wash hands after handling anything in treated zones.

QCan fly management be included in an annual maintenance contract?

For homes and businesses served by our Goa branch, annual maintenance contracts provide scheduled, year-round visits with service reports, and fly management can be discussed as part of that programme. Scope, visit frequency and any warranty terms are set out in the service agreement. Our Shamshabad branch has recently opened and is still confirming its services, so share your location and problem and the team will confirm whether it can help.

QDo house flies spread disease?

House flies move between waste and food, so they can carry germs onto surfaces and food. This is why flies are taken seriously in kitchens and food businesses. Keeping food covered, managing waste and controlling breeding sites all reduce the risk. If anyone in your household or staff becomes unwell, please consult a doctor.
