Quick answer
Wood borer treatment in Margao starts with an inspection to confirm active borers. Fresh powder below small round holes is the clearest sign. Treatment then reaches the larvae inside the wood, usually through the exit holes and unpolished surfaces. Fumigation is used for heavily infested movable items where it is the right method. Our Goa branch in Chimbel treats furniture, doors, frames and structural timber across Margao, and advises on keeping wood dry afterwards.
Key points
- Fresh, pale powder below small round holes is the clearest sign of active wood borer.
- Termites usually leave mud tubes; wood borers leave clean exit holes and fine frass.
- Treatment targets larvae inside the wood, mainly through exit holes and unpolished surfaces.
- Treatment stops borer activity but does not repair existing holes or restore weakened timber.
- Keeping wood dry and sealed, especially through Goa's monsoon, helps prevent re-infestation.
Have you found tiny round holes in a wardrobe, door frame or ceiling beam, with a small heap of fine powder below? Wood borer is a likely cause. Our Goa branch in Chimbel provides wood borer treatment in Margao (also called Madgaon) for furniture, doors, frames and structural timber. Every job starts with an inspection to confirm what is active and how far it has spread.
Wood borers are beetles whose larvae tunnel inside wood, feeding for a long time before the adults chew their way out. The holes you see are exit holes. By the time they appear, there may be more activity hidden inside. Good treatment reaches that hidden activity, protects nearby woodwork and reduces the conditions that let borers return.
Is it wood borer, termite or something else?
The diagnosis matters, because termites and wood borers need different treatments. These signs point to wood borer:
- Small, neat round or oval holes on the wood surface, often in clusters
- Fine, flour-like or gritty powder (frass) below the holes that comes back after you wipe it away
- Wood that sounds hollow when tapped, or edges and corners that crumble
- Damage on loose furniture, cane or bamboo items, not only on woodwork touching walls or floors
Termites usually leave mud tubes or soil-packed tunnels, and they often come up from the ground or through walls. Our guide on how to tell termite damage from wood borer damage explains the differences in detail. If you are seeing mud tubes, our page on termite control in Margao is the better place to start.
Fresh powder is the most useful clue. Old holes with no new dust may be past damage. Holes with fresh, pale powder suggest borers are still active.
What woodwork is usually affected in Margao properties?
Margao has a wide mix of buildings, and each type needs a slightly different approach. Older family homes, in pockets such as Comba, often have timber rafters, wooden ceilings, heavy doors and inherited furniture. Newer apartment blocks in Fatorda, Navelim and Gogol tend to have plywood wardrobes, modular kitchens and veneered doors. Shops and offices around central Margao have wooden counters, racks and storage shelving.
| Property | Wooden items commonly involved | What the inspection focuses on |
|---|---|---|
| Older houses and family homes | Roof rafters, ceiling planks, doors, window frames, old cupboards and beds | How far borers have reached into structural timber, roof leaks and damp, and which pieces are worth treating |
| Flats and newer houses | Wardrobes, beds, kitchen cabinets, door frames, plywood and veneered panels | Whether the problem started in one item that was brought in, or has spread across rooms |
| Shops and offices | Counters, display racks, partitions, cabin furniture | Planning the work around business hours and stock |
| Warehouses and stores | Pallets, crates, stored timber, packed goods | Whether isolation, targeted treatment or fumigation is the right method |

How do we carry out wood borer treatment?
We follow an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. That means inspection first, then advice on moisture and prevention, and targeted treatment only where it is needed.
- First conversation. You tell us where you see holes or powder, what the items are and roughly how old they are. Photos help us plan the visit.
- Inspection. We check the affected pieces and the woodwork around them. This includes the backs and undersides of furniture, the bottoms of door frames and any roof timber we can reach. We look for fresh frass, damp and the likely source.
- Treatment plan. Before work begins, we explain which items need treatment and the method for each. We also cover what you need to prepare and the safety precautions.
- Application. Treatment is aimed at the tunnels inside the wood, not just the surface. It is typically injected into exit holes and applied to bare, unpolished areas such as backs, undersides and joints, which absorb it far better than polished faces.
- Aftercare advice. We tell you how to clean up dust, keep the wood dry and watch for any fresh powder.
- Service report. A report of the work done is shared after the visit, with updates on WhatsApp.
Which method suits which item?
| Item | Usual approach | Points to note |
|---|---|---|
| Furniture in daily use | Injection into holes plus treatment of unpolished surfaces | Usually done in place, room by room |
| Fixed doors, frames and panelling | Targeted injection and treatment of exposed faces | Hinge edges and the bottoms of frames are checked carefully |
| Roof rafters and ceiling timber | Treatment of accessible timber and a check on its condition | Treatment stops activity but does not restore strength. Badly weakened timber may need a carpenter. |
| Heavily infested movable items, crates, stored goods | Fumigation, where it is the appropriate method | Items are enclosed and the area kept clear for the period advised |
| Cane, bamboo and small decorative pieces | Depends on value and condition | Replacing an inexpensive, badly damaged item can be more sensible than treating it |
How should you prepare, and what is safe afterwards?
- Empty the drawers and wardrobes that are being treated, and move small items away from the work area.
- Remove or cover food, utensils and anything that goes in the mouth.
- Keep children and pets out of treated rooms until surfaces are dry, or for as long as the technician advises.
- Open windows and keep the rooms ventilated.
- Do not wipe or polish treated unpolished surfaces until you are told it is fine.
- Wash your hands if you touch treated wood.
Please keep a family member or staff representative present during the service. We use CIB&RC-registered products and maintain Material Safety Data Sheets for the products we use. If anyone feels unwell after a treatment, please see a doctor.
Records, licensing and warranty
Efficacy Pest Control is a licensed pest control operator under the Directorate of Agriculture, Goa. A written service report is shared after each visit, which is useful when a landlord, housing society or management needs a record of the work.
Food businesses have extra needs, for example restaurants and bakeries with wooden shelving or storage. For them we provide documentation aligned with HACCP and FSSAI audit expectations. Our page on commercial pest control in Margao covers scheduled programmes for businesses.
A warranty applies to the treated area for specific services, as set out in your service agreement. It varies by pest and treatment. It does not cover structural changes, new construction, failure to follow post-service instructions, or untreated wooden items brought in later.
Which parts of Margao do we cover?
Our company records cover Margao, including Fatorda, Navelim, Aquem, Borda, Gogol and Comba. If you are on the edge of town or unsure, share your location when you contact us and we will confirm. For other pest problems in town, see our overview of pest control in Margao.
How can you keep borers away in Goa's humid climate?
Goa's heavy south-west monsoon and humid coastal air keep wood damp for much of the year. Damp, unsealed timber is easier for borers to attack, so prevention is mostly about moisture and vigilance.
- Fix roof leaks and wall seepage before the monsoon, especially above wooden ceilings and rafters.
- Keep wardrobes and cupboards slightly away from damp walls, and air them out during dry spells.
- Inspect second-hand, antique or inherited furniture before bringing it home, and keep it apart until it has been checked.
- Keep wood polished or sealed. Beetles lay eggs in cracks, open grain and unfinished surfaces.
- Check for fresh powder every few months, particularly after the monsoon.
- If you are renovating, ask about borer protection before new woodwork is polished or fixed in place. Exposed timber is much easier to treat.
To arrange wood borer treatment in Margao, contact our Goa branch in Chimbel or request an inspection. Tell us your area, the items affected and, if possible, send a few photos of the holes and powder so we can plan the visit.
Frequently asked questions
QWill the holes in my furniture disappear after treatment?
No. Treatment is meant to stop the borers living inside the wood. The existing holes and tunnels are damage that stays behind. Once we confirm there is no fresh powder, a carpenter or polisher can fill the holes and refinish the surface. If a structural piece has been badly hollowed out, it may need to be strengthened or replaced rather than simply repaired.
QCan wood borers spread from one piece of furniture to another?
Yes. Adult beetles that emerge from infested wood can lay eggs on nearby wooden items, especially unpolished or damp ones. This is why we check the furniture and woodwork around an affected piece, not just the item where you first noticed holes. Keeping a newly bought or inherited item apart until it has been checked also reduces the risk.
QDo we need to move out of the house during wood borer treatment?
In most homes, no. The work is usually planned room by room, so you can keep using the rest of the house. You will need to keep children and pets out of treated rooms until surfaces are dry or for the time advised, and ventilate well. Fumigation of heavily infested items is different, and we explain those arrangements separately.
QCan old teak or rosewood furniture be treated without spoiling the finish?
Usually, yes, with care. Treatment is applied mainly through the exit holes and on unpolished areas such as backs, undersides and joints, so the visible polished faces are disturbed as little as possible. We look at the condition and finish of each valuable piece during the inspection and discuss any risks with you before starting.
QHow will I know the treatment has worked?
Watch for fresh powder. A little old dust may still fall from existing tunnels for a while after treatment, so clean the area and check again over the following weeks. If pale, fresh frass keeps appearing below the same holes, let us know so we can check the item again. Your service report records which items were treated.
QHow is the cost of wood borer treatment worked out?
It depends on the number and size of the items, how badly they are affected, the method needed and how easy the timber is to reach, for example roof rafters compared with a single wardrobe. Photos help us give an initial idea, and the inspection confirms the scope. Payment is as per the quotation or invoice; cash, UPI, card, net banking and bank transfer are accepted.
QIs a spray from the shop enough to deal with wood borer?
Usually not. The larvae live deep inside the wood, and a surface spray rarely reaches them, especially on polished furniture. Please also avoid mixing or improvising chemicals at home. If you notice holes and fresh powder, take photos, sweep up gently without spreading dust to other rooms, and arrange an inspection so the right method can be chosen.
