Quick answer
During Hyderabad's hot months, roughly March to June, outdoor water dries up and daytime heat is intense, so pests move towards shade and moisture indoors. Cockroaches gather around kitchen sinks and drains, ants trail to any water or sugar, rodents stay near water tanks, sumps and stored food, and mosquitoes breed in stored water and air coolers. Fixing leaks, covering water, sealing drains and gaps, and storing food airtight prevents many problems.
Key points
- Hyderabad's hot months, roughly March to June, push pests towards indoor water and shade.
- Cockroaches favour kitchen sinks, cabinets and drains; ants trail to water as well as sugar.
- Rodents stay close to water tanks, sumps, stored food and garbage.
- Stored water in drums, pots and air cooler trays can breed mosquitoes if not covered and scrubbed weekly.
- Fixing leaks, covering water, closing drains, sealing gaps and storing food airtight reduce most summer pest pressure.
Summer pests in Hyderabad follow a simple rule: they go where the water and shade are. From roughly March to June, the Deccan plateau is hot and dry. Puddles, garden soil and open drains dry out, and the cool, damp corners of our homes become the most comfortable places for insects and rodents to be.
This guide explains why the heat pushes pests indoors, where they tend to gather in kitchens, bathrooms and water storage, and what you can do about it. It also covers when a problem has grown beyond household measures.
Why does summer heat drive pests indoors?
Insects are small and lose moisture quickly. In hot, dry air they must find water often or they die, so they move towards any reliable source: a dripping tap, a wet sink, a condensation line or a bucket left on the bathroom floor.
Heat also drives them towards shade. The gap behind a refrigerator, the cabinet under the sink, the inside of a drain or the cellar parking of an apartment block stays cooler than open ground. Rodents behave the same way, staying close to shelter, food and water and moving about mostly at night.
Our habits add to this. Summer is when many households store extra water in drums, buckets and clay pots, run air coolers, and keep stocks of grains, pickles and summer foods. Each of these gives pests something they need.
Where do summer pests show up in a Hyderabad home?
Kitchens
The kitchen offers everything at once: water at the sink, food crumbs, grease and warm hiding places near the stove and fridge motor. Cockroaches hide in cabinet hinges, under the sink and behind appliances. Ants trail along the counter edge to sugar, fruit, pet food or simply a wet sink. Stored rice, dal and flour can attract their own pests, covered in our guide to rice and dal pests in Hyderabad kitchens.
Bathrooms and drains
Floor traps and drain pipes stay damp and cool even in the hottest weather. Larger cockroaches often live in drains and sewer lines and climb out through floor traps and gaps around pipes at night. Small flies may also breed in the slime inside drains that are rarely cleaned.
Water tanks, sumps and stored water
Overhead tanks, underground sumps, drums and buckets draw rodents looking for water and mosquitoes looking for a place to lay eggs. Rats can gnaw plastic lids and pipes, and use the gaps around tank inlets as a way in. Mosquitoes that bite during the day breed readily in clean water stored in containers, which is why our separate guide on stored water drums and summer mosquitoes is worth reading if your household stores water.
Air coolers, balconies and cellars
An air cooler's water tray is still water, often left topped up for weeks. Plant saucers, unused pots and AC drip trays on balconies do the same job. In apartments, cellar parking areas with sumps, garbage bins and pipe shafts can be a shelter for rodents and cockroaches; see pests in cellar parking and basements.
Which pests should you watch for between March and June?
| Pest | Where it gathers in summer | What draws it | Simple first step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small cockroaches | Kitchen cabinets, behind appliances | Water, grease, food crumbs, warmth | Dry the sink at night; clean behind the stove and fridge |
| Large cockroaches | Drains, floor traps, sumps | Damp, cool pipes and sewer lines | Keep drain covers closed; seal gaps around pipes |
| Ants | Sinks, counters, pet bowls, plant saucers | Water and sugary food | Wipe trails with soapy water; fix drips |
| Rats and mice | Near tanks, sumps, stores and garbage | Water, stored food, shelter | Cover tanks tightly; store food in hard containers |
| Mosquitoes | Drums, coolers, pots, trays | Stored and standing water | Cover water; empty and scrub containers weekly |
| Flies | Garbage bins, drains, fruit bowls | Food waste that rots faster in heat | Clear garbage daily; keep bins lidded |
Towards the end of summer, the first pre-monsoon showers can bring out winged termites and a fresh wave of insects. Our guide to monsoon pests in Hyderabad covers what follows, and the Hyderabad pest calendar sets out the whole year month by month.
Practical steps to keep summer pests out
Most summer pest pressure comes down to water, food and entry points. Work through this checklist room by room:
- Fix leaks first. Repair dripping taps, leaking pipe joints under the sink and seepage around the washing machine.
- Dry the kitchen at night. Wipe the sink and counter dry and leave no water in buckets or vessels overnight.
- Close the drains. Keep floor-trap covers in place, use fine mesh over open drain points and run water through rarely used drains so the trap stays sealed.
- Cover all stored water. Use tight lids on drums, buckets, pots and tanks. Check that overhead tank and sump lids sit firmly with no gaps.
- Empty and scrub containers weekly. Mosquito eggs can stick to container walls, so scrub the inside rather than just refilling.
- Look after the air cooler. Drain, clean and refill the water tray regularly, and drain it fully when the cooler is not in use.
- Store food airtight. Keep grains, sugar, snacks and pet food in hard, sealed containers. Do not leave fruit or sweets open on the counter.
- Clear garbage daily. Use lidded bins and rinse them, as food waste rots quickly in the heat.
- Seal gaps. Fill gaps around pipes, cables and door frames, and fit door sweeps where there is a gap under the door.
- Check balconies and terraces. Empty plant saucers, stack unused pots upside down and clear AC drip trays.
Using household products safely in the heat
If you use a household insecticide, read and follow the label directions exactly. Do not spray on kitchen counters, utensils or food, and never mix products. Keep children and pets out of treated areas until they are dry or for as long as the label advises, ventilate the room and wash your hands afterwards.
Sprays often scatter cockroaches and ants rather than solving the problem, and can make professional baiting less effective later. Our dos and don'ts of pest control explain why. If anyone has a strong reaction to a bite or sting, or feels unwell, see a doctor.
A note for restaurants, hostels and shops
Busy summer kitchens, cold drink counters and staff accommodation face the same pressures on a larger scale. Food businesses are expected to keep premises free of pests as part of the FSSAI Schedule 4 hygiene requirements, and many follow HACCP principles. Daily drain cleaning, sealed dry stores, lidded waste and a documented pest management programme matter more in the hot months, not less.
When should you call a professional?
Household steps help a great deal, but some signs suggest an established problem:
- Cockroaches seen during the day, which often means many more are hiding nearby.
- Rat or mouse droppings, gnaw marks on pipes or lids, or scratching sounds at night.
- Ant trails that return within days despite cleaning.
- Mosquito larvae in your tank or sump, or mosquitoes indoors even after you have covered all water.
- Pests appearing across several flats, which points to shared drains, shafts or cellars that one household cannot fix alone.
How do we approach summer pest problems?
Efficacy Pest Control follows an Integrated Pest Management approach: inspect first to find where pests are living and how they get in, give sanitation and proofing advice, and then use targeted treatment only where it is needed. We maintain Material Safety Data Sheets for the products we use.
These are the practices we have built through our established Goa operation, where we work as a licensed pest control operator using CIB&RC-registered products. Our Shamshabad branch has recently opened — tell us your location and the problem, and we'll confirm whether we can help. You can learn more about the Hyderabad branch in Shamshabad.
Frequently asked questions
QWhy do I see more cockroaches in my kitchen during summer?
Cockroaches need water often and prefer warm, sheltered spots. When outdoor conditions turn hot and dry, your kitchen sink, the space under it and the warm area behind the fridge become ideal. Drain cockroaches also climb out of floor traps at night. Drying the sink before bed, closing drain covers and removing grease and crumbs behind appliances usually reduces the numbers you see.
QCan an air cooler cause mosquito problems?
Yes. The water tray in an air cooler is standing water, and if it is topped up for weeks without being emptied, mosquitoes can breed in it. Drain and clean the tray regularly, scrub the inside to remove any eggs stuck to the walls, and drain it completely when the cooler is not in use for a while.
QAnts keep coming to my sink but there is no food. Why?
In hot weather, ants often forage for water as well as food. A wet sink, a dripping tap, a pet's water bowl or a plant saucer can be enough to set up a trail. Wipe trails with soapy water to remove the scent they follow, fix drips and keep the sink dry. If trails keep returning, the nest may be inside a wall or under the floor.
QHow do I stop rats getting into my overhead tank or sump?
Make sure lids sit firmly with no gaps, and check the area around inlet and overflow pipes, which rats use as a way in. Keep the surroundings free of garbage and clutter where they can shelter. If you find droppings, gnaw marks on lids or pipes, or signs of rodents in the water, stop using that water for drinking and get the tank inspected and cleaned.
QIs it safe to use cockroach spray in the kitchen?
Only if you follow the label directions exactly. Never spray on counters, utensils or food, do not mix products, ventilate the room and keep children and pets away until the area is dry or as the label advises. Sprays tend to scatter cockroaches, so they often do not solve an established problem and can interfere with baiting later.
