Quick answer

Efficacy Pest Control's Goa branch provides wood borer treatment in Candolim, including Sinquerim and Nerul, for homes, villas, holiday rentals, hotels and restaurants. Each job starts with an inspection to confirm whether beetles are still active and to rule out termites. We then treat the affected furniture, doors, frames and timber, give safety guidance and share a service report. Treatment uses CIB&RC-registered products, applied by a licensed pest control operator.

Key points

  • Wood borer larvae feed inside timber for months before adults emerge through small round exit holes, so powder is often a late sign.
  • Fresh, pale powder and new holes after cleaning suggest active wood borer; mud tubes or soil-packed damage point to termites.
  • Polish and paint limit how much treatment soaks in, so finished pieces are treated through the holes and unfinished faces.
  • Our Goa branch covers Candolim, including Sinquerim and Nerul, and is a licensed pest control operator using CIB&RC-registered products.
  • For specific services, a warranty applies to the treated area, as set out in the service agreement.

Fine powder under a wardrobe, tiny round holes in a door frame or a bed that feels weak at the joints usually point to wood-boring beetles. Our Goa branch offers wood borer treatment in Candolim, Sinquerim and Nerul. We treat flats, independent houses, villas, holiday rentals, guesthouses, hotels, cafés and restaurants.

The treatment covers furniture, doors, frames and structural timber affected by powder-post and furniture beetles. Every job starts with an inspection, because the right method depends on the wood, its finish and whether the infestation is still active. For an overview of the service, see our wood borer treatment page.

Is it wood borer, termites or old damage?

Not every hole means a live problem, and not every powdery mess is wood borer. Before we treat anything, we work out what is actually happening. These are the signs we look for:

What you seeWhat it usually suggests
Small round holes with fresh, pale, flour-like or gritty powder below themLikely active wood borer. Adult beetles have recently emerged, and larvae may still be feeding inside.
New holes appearing after you have cleaned the areaOngoing activity that needs treatment
Old holes with darkened edges and no fresh powder for monthsPossibly past activity. We check carefully before recommending treatment.
Mud tubes, soil packed into the damage, or wood hollowed out along the grainMore typical of termites, which need a different treatment

If you are unsure which pest you have, our guide to telling termites and wood borer apart explains the differences in more detail. If termites turn out to be the cause, see our page on termite control in Candolim.

Why does wood borer show up in Candolim properties?

Wood-boring beetles spend most of their life as larvae tunnelling inside timber, sometimes for a year or more. They then emerge as adults through small exit holes. By the time you notice powder, the infestation has usually been developing quietly for some time.

A few situations come up often in a coastal area like Candolim:

  • Holiday homes and villas closed through the monsoon. Goa's long, very humid south-west monsoon, combined with shut rooms and little air movement, can leave wooden furniture and fittings damp. Owners returning after the rains often find the first powder on floors and shelves.
  • Furniture brought in from elsewhere. A second-hand chest, a reclaimed door or a new batch of furniture for a rental can carry larvae inside. These may only show themselves months later.
  • Cane, bamboo and untreated sapwood. Powder-post beetles are attracted to bamboo, cane and the starchy outer sapwood of some hardwoods. Décor items and budget furniture are worth checking.
  • Wooden ceilings, staircases and panelling. In older houses and renovated villas, damage can stay hidden behind paint or polish.

If you own teak or rosewood pieces, read our guide to wood borer in teak and rosewood furniture before the visit.

How do we treat wood borer in an occupied home or hotel?

We follow an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. We inspect, deal with the conditions that help the pest, and treat only where it is needed. A typical job runs like this:

  1. Inspection. We check each wooden item and fitting for holes, fresh powder and soft or crumbling edges. We note the type of wood and its finish, and look for damp or poorly ventilated spots.
  2. A clear plan. We explain which items are active, which look like old damage, and what we propose to treat. Badly weakened timber may need repair or replacement by a carpenter, and we will tell you if we think so.
  3. Targeted treatment. We apply treatment into exit holes and tunnels and onto exposed surfaces. We focus on joints, the backs and undersides of furniture, and end grain, where beetles often attack. Polish and paint limit what can soak in, so finished pieces are treated through the holes and their unfinished faces. If another method, such as fumigation, suits a particular item or consignment better, we will discuss it with you.
  4. Safety and aftercare advice. We tell you how long to keep the area ventilated and unused, and what to expect over the following weeks.
  5. Service report. You receive a service report after the visit, with WhatsApp updates if you prefer.

Our Goa branch is a licensed pest control operator under the Directorate of Agriculture, Goa, and uses CIB&RC-registered products. We maintain Material Safety Data Sheets for the products we use.

Hotels, guesthouses and restaurants

For hospitality properties along the Candolim and Sinquerim stretch, the main practical question is usually timing. You can schedule treatment one block of rooms at a time, or during the quieter months before the tourist season. Either way, rooms stay out of use for as short a time as possible.

Common places to check include:

  • headboards, wardrobes and luggage racks
  • wooden blinds and bar counters
  • outdoor furniture

The service report from each visit gives your maintenance or quality team a record of what was inspected and treated. If you also need routine pest management for kitchens, stores and staff areas, see commercial pest control in Candolim.

What to do before and after the visit

Preparing

  • Clear space around affected furniture, and empty any wardrobes and drawers that will be treated.
  • Cover or put away food, utensils and toothbrushes in nearby rooms.
  • Keep children and pets out of the room during treatment.
  • Arrange for a member of the household or a staff representative to be present during the service.

Afterwards

  • Keep children and pets away from treated wood until it is dry, or for as long as we advise.
  • Open the windows and keep the room ventilated.
  • Wash your hands after handling treated items.
  • Do not polish, paint or fill holes until we confirm it is fine to do so.
  • Watch for fresh powder or new holes over the following weeks, and tell us if you see any.

If anyone feels unwell after a treatment, see a doctor and tell them what treatment was carried out.

Areas we cover around Candolim

Our Goa branch covers Candolim, including Sinquerim and Nerul. That includes:

  • homes in the residential lanes, apartments and villas
  • the market and beach-road side, with its hotels, guesthouses, cafés, bars and restaurants
  • properties towards Nerul

For other pest problems in the area, see our page on pest control in Candolim.

What affects the cost, and is there a warranty?

We quote after the inspection. The main factors are:

  • the number and size of wooden items, or the area of fixed woodwork
  • how widespread and deep the activity is
  • the type of wood, its finish and how easy it is to reach
  • whether several rooms or buildings need treating in phases

For specific services, a warranty applies to the treated area, as set out in your service agreement. It varies by treatment. It does not cover structural changes, new construction, or cases where post-service instructions were not followed. Because the warranty covers the treated area, furniture you bring in later falls outside it, so let us know about any new pieces.

Arranging an inspection

Contact our Goa branch in Chimbel and tell us:

  • where the property is in Candolim, Sinquerim or Nerul
  • what kind of property it is
  • what you have noticed

Photos of the holes and powder help. We will arrange an inspection and explain the options before any treatment starts. Branch details are on our Goa branch page.

Frequently asked questions

QWill a spray from a shop get rid of wood borer?

A surface spray may kill a few beetles that are out in the open. However, the larvae feed deep inside the wood, often for many months, where a light spray does not reach. Polish and paint also stop most of it from soaking in. That is why the problem often returns. Professional treatment targets the exit holes, tunnels and unfinished faces of the wood, after an inspection confirms the activity.

QI still see some powder after treatment. Has it failed?

Not necessarily. Old powder already in the tunnels can keep falling out for a while, especially when furniture is moved or cleaned. Wipe the area clean and watch it. If fresh powder keeps appearing in the same spot, or you find new holes over the following weeks, tell our Goa branch so we can check the item again.

QCan wood borer spread from one piece of furniture to another?

Yes. Adult beetles emerge from infested wood and can lay eggs in nearby timber, particularly wood that is unfinished, damp or has exposed end grain. This is why we inspect the other wooden items in the room, not just the one showing powder. It is also why it makes sense to check second-hand or newly bought pieces before placing them next to good furniture.

QHow long should a treated room stay unused?

It depends on the product, the number of items treated and how well the room ventilates. Our technician will tell you the waiting time on the day. As a general rule, keep children and pets away from treated wood until it is dry, keep the windows open, and wash your hands after handling treated items.

QOur Candolim villa is locked up during the monsoon. What should we do?

Before you leave, ask someone to air the house now and then if possible, and keep wooden furniture slightly away from damp walls. When you return, look for fresh powder on floors, shelves and inside wardrobes. If you see any, take photos and contact our Goa branch, so we can arrange an inspection before the damage spreads further.

QDo you treat fixed woodwork such as ceilings, door frames and staircases?

Yes. The service covers doors, frames and structural timber as well as furniture. For fixed woodwork, we first check how far the damage extends and whether any section is too weak to keep. Where that is the case, we will recommend that a carpenter repairs or replaces it alongside the treatment.

QWill our hotel get a record of the treatment?

Yes. After each visit, we share a service report showing what was inspected and treated, and we can send updates on WhatsApp. Many hotels and guesthouses find this useful for their maintenance logs and internal quality checks, especially when guest rooms are treated in phases.
