Quick answer

Efficacy Pest Control's Goa branch provides wood borer treatment in Vasco da Gama, including Dabolim, Chicalim and Bogmalo. A technician first inspects furniture, doors, frames and roof timber to confirm active powder-post or furniture beetle activity and rule out termites. Affected wood is treated by injecting exit holes or small drilled points and treating bare surfaces. Holes are then sealed, and a service report is shared after the visit.

Key points

  • Wood borer larvae feed inside timber for months; exit holes and fine powder appear at the end of that cycle.
  • Damp, older timber is more prone to furniture beetle, which matters in Vasco's humid coastal climate and heavy monsoon.
  • Treatment is injected into holes or small drilled points because polish limits how far surface treatment penetrates.
  • Mud tubes or soil in damaged wood point to termites, which need a different treatment.
  • Our Goa branch, a licensed pest control operator, covers Vasco da Gama including Dabolim, Chicalim and Bogmalo.

Tiny round holes in a wardrobe, door frame or ceiling rafter, with small heaps of fine powder underneath, usually mean wood borer activity. Our Goa branch in Chimbel provides wood borer treatment in Vasco da Gama, including Dabolim, Chicalim and Bogmalo. We treat homes, shops, offices and guest accommodation.

This page explains what we check, how the treatment works and what you need to do before and after a visit. For a general overview of the service, see our wood borer treatment service page.

What does wood borer damage look like?

Wood borers are beetles whose larvae live inside timber. They feed and tunnel for months, sometimes longer, before the adults chew their way out. The exit holes you see on the surface are only the end of that cycle, and the wood inside may already be tunnelled.

Items worth checking in a typical Vasco home or business include:

  • Solid-wood wardrobes, beds, cots, dining tables and inherited furniture
  • Main doors, door and window frames, and wooden staircases
  • Roof rafters, purlins and false-ceiling battens in older houses
  • Shop counters and display shelving
  • Wooden pallets and packing crates in godowns and stores

Is it wood borer or termite?

The two are often confused, and they need different treatment. This quick comparison helps. Our guide on protecting older Goan homes from termites and wood borer goes into more detail.

What you seeUsually points to
Small, neat round holes with fine, flour-like powder belowPowder-post beetle
Round holes with slightly gritty powder, often in older or damp woodFurniture beetle
Mud tubes on walls, soil-filled galleries, wood that sounds hollowTermites
Old holes with no fresh powder over several weeksPossibly past activity; still worth an inspection

If you see mud tubes or soil inside damaged wood, read our page on termite control in Vasco da Gama. Termites usually come up from the soil and need a different approach.

Why does woodwork in Vasco need extra attention?

Vasco da Gama sits on a coastal peninsula. Like the rest of Goa, it has a long, very heavy south-west monsoon and humid air for much of the year.

Furniture beetles are more likely in older timber that stays damp. Common examples are a wardrobe pushed against a seepage-prone wall, a frame beside a leaking window, or roof timber under displaced tiles.

Powder-post beetles behave differently. They attack the starchy sapwood of certain hardwoods, so they can appear in fairly new furniture made from untreated timber.

If you move house or bring in second-hand furniture, borers can travel inside these pieces unnoticed. Check any used wooden item for holes or powder before it comes indoors.

How do we treat wood borer in Vasco da Gama?

We follow an Integrated Pest Management approach: inspection first, advice on moisture and conditions, then targeted treatment. Our Goa operation is a licensed pest control operator (Directorate of Agriculture, Goa) and uses CIB&RC-registered products.

  1. Inspection. The technician checks wooden items room by room. They look for fresh powder and clean-edged holes, which suggest current activity, and note damp spots. They also rule out termites.
  2. A clear plan. We explain which items need treatment and which may be too weak to be worth saving. For heavily infested movable items or stored goods, we may advise fumigation where it is the appropriate method.
  3. Treatment into the wood. Polish and varnish limit how far a surface treatment can penetrate. So treatment is injected into exit holes and, for thick timber, into small drilled points. Unpolished faces such as backs, undersides and joints are also treated.
  4. Sealing. Treated holes are filled or sealed. Any new hole that appears later is then easy to spot.
  5. Report. You receive a service report after the visit, and we share updates on WhatsApp.

Some beetles that were already close to emerging may still come out shortly after treatment. If you notice new holes or fresh powder, tell us so we can take a look.

Flats, older houses and businesses: what changes?

Flats and apartment blocks

In flats in Vasco town and Chicalim, the work is usually furniture-focused: wardrobes, beds, doors and frames. We can plan the treatment room by room so the household can keep using the rest of the home.

Older independent houses

Older houses around Dabolim and Vasco may have exposed roof timber, wooden ceilings and staircases. Inspecting these needs safe access to the roof space or ceiling level. We will also tell you if the damage looks structural, so you can consult a carpenter or engineer.

Shops, offices, stores and guesthouses

For shops, offices and godowns with wooden fittings or pallets, we schedule visits around working hours and provide documented service records. Guesthouses near Bogmalo can have rooms treated in batches. Businesses wanting year-round cover can see our commercial pest control in Vasco da Gama page.

How should you prepare, and what about safety?

  • Empty drawers and wardrobes that are to be treated, and move items away from walls where possible.
  • Remove or cover food, utensils, clothes and bedding near the treatment area.
  • Tell us in advance if anyone at home is pregnant or has asthma or another health concern, so we can plan the visit. For medical questions, please speak to your doctor.
  • Keep children and pets away from treated surfaces until they are dry, or for as long as the technician advises.
  • Ventilate the rooms afterwards, and wash your hands if you touch treated wood.
  • Have a family member or staff representative present during the service.

We maintain Material Safety Data Sheets for the products we use, so you can ask what was applied in your home.

What affects the cost?

We give a quotation after the inspection rather than a fixed rate. The main factors are:

  • the number and size of items or the area of timber to be treated
  • how far the infestation has spread
  • the type of wood and its finish
  • access, for example roof timber or fitted cupboards
  • whether fumigation is needed for any items

How can you keep wood borer from coming back?

  • Fix leaks and seepage before the monsoon, and keep furniture slightly away from damp walls.
  • Look over wooden furniture after each monsoon for new holes or powder.
  • Inspect second-hand or stored furniture before bringing it indoors.
  • For new woodwork, ask your carpenter about properly seasoned and treated timber.

Valuable teak or rosewood pieces need particular care. Our guide to wood borer in teak and rosewood furniture explains why.

Where a warranty applies, it covers the treated area for specific services, as set out in your service agreement.

Frequently asked questions

QDo we need to move out of our flat during wood borer treatment?

Usually not, when the treatment is limited to furniture, doors and frames. You will be asked to stay out of the rooms being treated and keep children and pets away until surfaces are dry or as the technician advises. Ventilate those rooms afterwards. If a larger area or roof timber is being treated, the technician will tell you during the inspection whether any extra precautions are needed.

QWill the treatment spoil polished or antique furniture?

Treatment is mainly injected into existing exit holes and applied to unpolished faces such as backs and undersides, which limits contact with the finished surface. Thick timber may need a few small drilled points, and these are sealed afterwards. If a piece is antique or has a delicate finish, mention it before the visit so the technician can discuss the safest approach with you.

QHow can I tell whether wood borers are still active?

Fresh, light-coloured powder below holes and holes with clean, sharp edges usually mean current activity. A simple check is to wipe away all the powder and look again after a week or two. If new powder appears, the borers are likely still active. Old, darkened holes with no fresh powder may be past damage, but an inspection is the reliable way to confirm.

QCan badly damaged furniture or roof timber be saved?

Often it can, if the wood still has enough strength. Treatment is aimed at the borers active inside the wood; it does not repair timber that has already been tunnelled or hollowed out. Where a beam, rafter or chair leg has lost too much strength, we will say so plainly so you can have it repaired or replaced by a carpenter.

QIs there a warranty on wood borer treatment?

For specific services, a limited warranty applies to the treated area, as set out in your service agreement. It varies by pest and treatment. It does not cover structural changes, new construction, or cases where post-service instructions were not followed. Please ask us to explain the terms for your job before the work starts.

QHow do I book, and how can I pay?

You can book through the website, by email or by phone, subject to availability. Payment is as per the quotation or invoice. Cash, UPI transfer, card, net banking and bank transfer are accepted. If you need to cancel, please give at least 48 hours' notice before the scheduled service, as a late-cancellation fee may apply.
